“Witnessing the evolution of a musician's career can be one of the more satisfying experiences for a music journalist, particularly when most of the observing can be done from a relatively close perch. It's one thing to hear successive new releases from a favorite artist who makes his or her home miles away and another to have the opportunity to stay tuned to the comings and goings of an individual who lives in my hometown.

This is a musician who could have set his sights on only being a much sought after side man, and having watched him anchor sets for respected greats, it was obvious that Dominelli had more to offer. Adding composer and bandleader to the resume equires additional dedication to one's music as well as a willingness to make things happen from the ground up.

With the release of Cafe Varze Jazz in 2003 Dominelli asserted himself as a leader who did not go unnoticed in the Canadian jazz community and he received two much deserved nods of approval in the form of a 2003 Western Canadian Music Award and a Juno nomination in 2004.

This disc is certain to bring his talents to the attention of even more listeners across this country, because, like it's predecessor it features bold, articulate and adventurous playing, but this time around the music also showcases his impressive compositional skills.”

VOODOO KING REVIEWS

"It's an eerily beautiful recording that conjures up the beat aesthetic of the 1950s and '60s without sounding dated. It is a recording of significant and compelling performances rather than a mere collection of unusual songs."

- GREG QUILL, The Toronto Star

"...Voodoo King houses riches inside...Bourne proves to be a true mystic that teems with the spirituality required to validate the title. Indeed, he is prolific in his ability to bewitch across a diverse range of styles...Bourne can rightfully lay claim to a throne few others could even approach."

-ERIC THOM - Exclaim Magazine

"definitely voodoo in the grooves...a truly great recording."

- HOLGER PETERSEN, CBC Radio/Stony Plain Records

"Bill Bourne can generally be depended upon to make compelling music, and Voodoo King is no exception..." - Dirty Linen Magazine

"Veteran Canadian folk artist Bill Bourne has the whiskey-soaked, smoke-cured voice of a baroom poet who has been around the block more times than he can remember... This powerful CD's 11 masterful songs are full of broken hearts and reflective regrets balanced by a streetwise philosophy of acceptance. "Portland," for example, reminds one of Tom Waits crying over a warm beer. Bourne's backing crew includes vocalists and instrumentalists on electric and slide guitars, cello, saxophones, percussion and bass, adding ot the bittersweet moods that draw you back again and again."

- Gary Joyner, Acoustic Guitar

"Canadian roots-rocker Bill Bourne has the voice of a soul that's lived life at it's toughest and survived to tell about it. With the same bent as Tom Waits under the influence of a strong bourbon, Bill Bourne's delivery is as much performance art as it is musical... Bourne wraps it up tight and sells it in convincing style. He's a vereran storyteller and his new album Voodoo King is proof positive that he's got some tales he'd like to share in his own inimitable way. Stellar."
